In June, 2016, our group went to the International Competition, and we had an amazing time! Though our project didn't place, we received very high scores and wonderful feedback.
The entire experience was remarkable.
The Wauwatosa East High School CmPS Project is a multi-year project of a small group of high school students, addressing the issue of overuse of plastic bags in our environment.
The students' effort was part of the international Community Problem solving competition, a program that challenges kids to make a positive impact in their communities. Their message was to educate and make people aware of this plastic problem and to encourage shoppers to keep and use reuseable, non-plastic bags in their cars or at home so that plastic bags are needed less and used less.
They started locally within their school group, then expanded to the larger city of Wauwatosa area, working with local stores and businesses to initiate action. They connected with local businesses, created a survey, and designed and sold reuseable bags, among other activities. To publicize their project, they also spoke with a radio station and gave multiple presentations in the community.
In conjunction with their project, they competed at state and international levels of competition. The group took first place at the state competition in May, 2016, where members presented their work, their progress, and their goals. They attended the international competition in Michigan along with other problem solving groups, not placing but enjoying the event and the feedback immensely.
